Eagle owl on high voltage pylon
Bubo bubo | Trento | December 2023
The mating season of the eagle owl begins in December, so it can happen that walking around Trento at night you can hear its song, audible from hundreds of meters away for us humans, kilometers for it that has super fine hearing. The Adige Valley is an ideal place for this majestic nocturnal bird of prey: limestone mountains with imposing unreachable cliffs where it can nest and a valley floor full of tasty prey, such as rabbits that live along the Adige. There is a big problem, however, that risks compromising the presence of this important animal, namely electrocution. The electricity pylons are in fact habitual perches where it emits its calls to attract a partner and to mark its territory. But with its wingspan, one of the largest owls on the planet risks coming into contact with the power cables and having no escape. The solution exists, just isolate the terminal part of the cables. Some pylons have been repaired, many still haven't.
In the photo, an eagle owl, right on a power pylon, in the city of Trento.
