A trip for photography enthusiasts looking to explore Finland's natural beauties. Deep in the Taiga, we will go on the hunt for wild animals, breathtaking landscapes, rivers, lakes, bogs and much more. Ringed seals, wolverines, brown bears, wolves, capercaillies, cranes, whooper swans, squirrels and many other creatures will be the protagonists of this journey...

Where?

Linnansaari National Park

Saimaa is the largest lake in Finland, as well as the fourth-largest in Europe. It is home to one of the few freshwater seal species on the planet, the Saimaa ringed seal, Pusa hispida saimensis. It is a subspecies of the more common ringed seal (Pusa hispida), and has been living in isolation from them following the last glaciation, when the continental mass rose separating the two populations. Within this lake are two national parks, established precisely for the protection of this incredible creature: the Kolovesi and the Linnansaari. During our journey we will take a sunset boat tour in search of this rare mammal.

Patvinsuo National Park and its surroundings

Land of swamps, brown bears, wolves and wolverines. Just a few kilometers from the border with Russian, Patvinsuo National Park is an unspoiled place ideal for talking a pleasant walk around a characteristic Finnish lake, using the traditional wooden boardwalks. Whooper swans, cranes, loons, and countless other birds nest here. The migration season is starting and we will make the most of it by snatching interesting sightings. We will spend nights in photographic hides in hopes of finding large mammals.

Hiidenportti National Park and its surroundings

The canyons of Hiidenportti are a striking sight. Along the path leading to the main chasm, one can admire a forest of shady spruce trees, a flowering meadow and a forest that was once periodically cleared by farmers who practiced the slash-and-burn method.

From August 30 to September 5, 2025

Program

A week-long trip, from the end of August to the beginning of September. We will depart by plane from Italy and arrive in Helsinki, the capital of Finland. From there we will travel by car to the area surrounding the Linnansaari National Park. The next day we will take a boat tour to explore Lake Saaima in search of the rare ringed seal. During the following days we will reach Natvinsuo National Park. We will spend a few nights inside photographic hides where, with a little luck, we might be able to observe brown bears, wolves and wolverines. We will hike through the park in search of other animals to photograph. Towards the end of our trip we will travel to Hiidenportti National Park to enjoy its evocative landscapes and continue our exploration of Finnish wildlife. Our journey will end at Kajaani Airport, from where we will take our return flight to Italy.
